Happy 2015!
1 Jan
As is my custom, on the first of every year, I put together a list of movies that are now ten years old. At first, it came from a place of, “Hey, can you believe these movies are this old now?!” As time has gone on, though, I find myself using movies as a sort of touchstone for where I was in my life at that time, both as a moviegoer and as a person.
2005 was a pretty big year in my life. Along with being a genuinely great movie year, it also happened to be the year I got married to my wonderful wife, Jen. And, soon enough, the two began to meld together, as I think back to movies that weren’t simply integral to my life, but in the life of my marriage.
It’s strange to think that these films that still seem to recent are now a decade old, much in the same way that it’s hard to believe that ten years of marriage has flown by so quickly. I’m sure that this way of thinking will be familiar to movie fans, who often have a special place in their hearts for certain films based on what stage in their lives the film was released.
Or, hey, perhaps it’s the opposite. Maybe there are times in our lives that are special because of the movies we saw at that time…
So, here we go. The following notable movies are now ten years old:
A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
MUNICH
CAPOTE
GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK
THE NEW WORLD
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
CRASH
WAR OF THE WORLDS
BATMAN BEGINS
WALK THE LINE
HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE
STAR WARS EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE
KING KONG
THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN
JUNEBUG
PRICE AND PREJUDICE
SERENITY
SIN CITY
CINDERELLA MAN
HUSTLE & FLOW
WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT
MR. AND MRS. SMITH (viewed by me and my wife on our honeymoon)
