Even before listening to your podcast, I figured I’d link to Jim Rohner’s episode on the film (plus another one I haven’t seen), where I got into a bit of a disagreement on trying to read things into a film based on the personal life of who directed it:

I can understand the tension there. I’m of two minds about it, but mostly I think it’s important to let the work speak for itself. The personal life of a filmmaker can’t be completely disregarded (lest we imagination devotion where there was cynicism or satire where there was sincerity) but as a foundation, I believe we should respond to the material on its own terms primarily if not exclusively. You may already know this if you’ve listened to our episode by now, but we don’t happen to bring Whale’s personal life into our discussion at all.
