Argento’s Suspiria is NOT a giallo. There was a recent Battleship Pretension episode with Kyle Anderson on this, but the short version is that a giallo must be a murder mystery, and the resolution may contain pseudoscience but is still presented as naturalistic. Argento’s Bird With Crystal Plumage, Deep Red, Tenebre and Opera are all famous examples of gialli, but Suspiria is just a supernatural horror film. And I regard the original as a much more overt horror film than the remake, which spends a lot of that added running time not being scary. Because it’s less focused it has less of a main protagonist, but if we treat Suzy as still being that, then as you admit she’s never really scared throughout. And having a bunch of baddies that we don’t care about die at the end does not make it horror, or else action movies would be horror.
