    This is one of the only things that would get a 5/5 on scares from me. Most would merely be “enjoyably creepy.” The second one was almost as unsettling, and I remember the third being more interesting for world-building than scares. From what I can tell the sequels take a sharp downhill turn from there, so I doubt I’ll ever see them.

    The worst thing is the sense of dread that comes when you realize the entity is linked to a person rather than a location. You get the feeling that even if she could avoid this particular incident, it would either get her later or create so much fear that she wouldn’t have much of a life even if she remains untouched. I get a similar feeling of inevitability and despair from Adam Nevill’s short story Pig Thing.

    I don’t think I’ve ever encountered someone who only cares about an issue because they enjoy whipping themselves into a fury and arguing about it. How would you even be able to decipher that as a person’s motive? I hope such a mindset is a rare anomaly.
