“You see him saying ‘it’s her against the world,’ showing that she’s dedicated, but doesn’t understand what everyone else can see…”

lol you got that right… She doesn’t realize it’s the Bush administration, where you have to deal with incompetent Bible College graduates that believe torture works, and you can’t get to the real work of actually finding and taking out Osama until you get a *democrat* in office again

So, a two and a half hour podcast and this is all you combed out of it? Nothing else to say except the most basic of political rhetoric?

I actually read The Pledge before Penn’s movie was greenlit (just because I’m a library junkie) and I remember how compelling I found it to be. One element I believe was more prevalent in the book was that so much of the protagonist’s obsession hinged on the vow he had made to the girl’s father. We make vows to ourselves and to the people in our lives and to God that are hasty and foolish, not necessarily because what we want to do is foolish, but because of the belief we have that our hope rests in whether or not we do them.

There are also vows we make in haste because we think they will add some sense of credibility or leverage to our position in life (see the tragic story of Jephthah in Judges 11). But regardless of the source of such obsessions and promises, the end result is almost always a hollow crater in our heart, kind of like the ashes after a relentless fire has burned out.

Really great episode guys. Great discussion.

What a great episode. I found it sobering and hilarious at the same time.
