    You said that Jesus was never mentioned in Tree of Life, but he does show up once:

    In the middle of the film, when the family is listening to a sermon in church, the priest talks about Job. He says that evil befalls the bad and the good alike and there is nowhere safe from suffering. The camera focuses on a stained glass image of Jesus wearing the crown of thorns as the priest says:

    “Is there nothing which is deathless? Nothing which does not pass away?”

    I think Malick is hinting at a greater truth, that Jesus, who did died, has defeated death and in him is the hope of being free of death, of not passing away.

      Good call. It had been a while since either of us had seen it, and I did not remember an overt reference to Jesus, but the scene you’re talking about certainly does qualify as a statement about Jesus.
