Hey guys. Interesting look at a movie I’ve seen a lot, but I’d never considered most of the things you talked about, both about the characters’ (and especially Brigid’s) obsessions and about how noir is about the past (I’m now rolodexing through all the noirs I’ve seen and it seems to hold up).
Here’s a theory: the black bird is a metaphor for Sam & Brigid’s relationship. Unexceptional on the outside, but to the seeker it’s a promise something much more. But on closer scrutiny, it turns out there is nothing more, so the seeker destroys it.
